Monetary Transaction process using swipe machine
Monetary Transaction |
Credit card combined with swipe machine is also
known as a credit card terminal. Today it is recognised as Electronic Data
Capture (EDC) machine and process
data quickly (PDQ). Working of EDC
machine is as under:-
1)
Customer hands over card to the cashier for
payment.
2)
Cashier puts card in the swipe machine, passing
it through a narrow slit.
3) Swipe
machine traps the vital information which is etched on the credit card.
(i) Name on card
(ii) Number of the
card
(iii)
Expiry date of card and location where purchase
is made.
4. Information obtained
is processed within seconds, meaning that the data captured is quickly
transported to payee’s service provider using mostly internet facilities. At
the other end, the data gets authorised & amount is transferred to payee.
5. There is a provision
in the machine to manually enter data if swiping of card fails to register
data.
Signature of
the card holder on credit card is one of the safety arrangements. Cashier verifies
this signature with signature on the slip printed in the machine. This slip is
the physical record of the transaction.
There are at
least three persons involved in the transaction.
ü
Person
holding card,
ü
Payee
and
ü
Service
provider of the payee. This is generally bank or through whom the payee gets the swipe machine.

Green Channel Counters of State
Bank of India:-
Green Channel Counter |
State Bank of India (SBI) came out with
a solution which doesn’t need to fill up any forms, count money or stand in a
queue. It needs a person to visit bank branch with ATM/Debit card to transact a
host of routine businesses, using ‘green channel counters'. ‘No queue banking' is
available in over 5,000 branches across the country. The person needs to handle
a transaction processing device (TPD) which is similar to point of sales (PoS)
machine. These machines are placed in exclusive green channel counters. Procedure
involves
1. Swipe ATM/debit card and chose
transaction like cash deposit, withdrawal and funds transfer from the menu
2. TPD is different from an ATM counter. Presently
there is no facility for cash deposits and funds transfers in ATMs.
3. TPD allows withdrawal of money in
desired denominations.
4. There is more than one green channel
counter in every branch. Hence, there may be no queue.
5. By encouraging people to shift to
swiping mode of transactions using their cards bank also has advantage.
6.
This
helps customers as no pay-in-slips, withdrawal forms, cheque leaves and remittance
forms are needed.
To summarise the advantage it is beneficial
to customers in saving time with paperless banking, & to the bank benefit
is it saves processing time, stationery and infrastructure. Cost of ATM
machines is around Rs. 4 lakh against
TPD cost of Rs. 7000. Rent for space needed for ATM
machine is generally much higher. Further it improves customer satisfaction and
image of the bank. For more information a few YouTube video urls are listed

Swipe Machine |
Information
so far is applicable to Portable Card Swipe Machines. Companies offering home delivered goods &
services, all shopkeepers, hawkers, various service providers, including even
tea sellers and vegetable vendors need such portable machines for convenience. This
allows exact spot payments. Some more methods are also available. Apart from using Debit/Credit Card it is possible to transfer money
using smart phone or just Aadhar Card. Dr. Raghuram Rajan, Ex President of
Reserve Bank of India launched UPI (Unified Payment Interface) launched this
during Jan 2016. He assured that UPI is the most sophisticated public payments
infrastructure in the world & with this smartphones will soon double up as
virtual debit cards. This system does money transfer more speedily and
accurately. Time needed to physically meet, count currency notes is saved.
There is a need to no more about this system of money transfer.
1.
What Is UPI? National
Payments Corp. of India (NPCI) launched Unified Payments Interface (UPI). UPI
is a mobile interface and works only on mobile phone. It allows customers to
instantaneously transfer funds across different banks with the use of a virtual
address. UPI is like an email ID for individual’s money. This is an
unique identifier that bank uses to transfer money and makes payments using IMPS.
IMPS is faster than NEFT(National Electronic Funds
Transfer). Money transfer using this method is immediate & works
24×7. This is is quick and any time service which doesn’t need digital wallet
or credit or debit card. Justvirtual address like yourname@bankname.com
is adequate. This eliminates need to exchange sensitive information such as
bank account number etc. during a financial transaction.
- Who supports UPI? This system is initiated by National Payments Corporation of India’s (NCPI), with support of the Reserve Bank of India and Indian Banks Association (IBA). NCPI operates the Rupay payments infrastructure which is similar to Visa and Master Card. It allows different banks to interconnect and transfer funds. UPI is more advanced version of IMPS. Presently 21 banks have been linked with NPCI. These banks are: Andhra Bank, Axis Bank, Bank of Maharashtra, Bhartiya Mahila Bank, Canara Bank, Catholic Syrian Bank, DCB Bank, Federal Bank, ICICI Bank, TJSB Sahakari Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Karnataka Bank, UCO Bank, Union Bank of India, United Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, South Indian Bank, Vijaya Bank and YES Bank. However, if your bank is one of above you can transfer funds to any bank. It is expected that soon service would be on all banks apps. Presently transfer limit is Rs. 1 lakh.
3.
How Does it Work? Currently, for making payment through bank account
number, account type, Bank name and IFSC code are essential. These details must
be correctly entered. Secondly banks take upto 12 hours to add a new payee. Money
transfer is possible only when payee is registered by the bank. UPI doesn’t
need all these details. The interface allows account holders across banks to transfer
money from their smartphones using any of these i.e. Aadhaar unique identity
number, mobile phone number or virtual payments address. Bank account details
are not needed by the interface. So far only 29 banks have agreed to start this
service. Hence, presently money transfer is possible between UPI-enabled banks
only. Two types of address are used to initiate a transaction. One is global and
second is local. Global address includes mobile number, Aadhaar and bank
account numbers. A local address may be a virtual address or virtual ID similar
to email ID. This virtual address allows to send and receive money from
multiple banks and prepaid payment issuers. In this case there is no need to
use a particular app to send and receive money. Example may be taxi service. At
end of the journey just give virtual address and the driver will request money
from it. After payment is made a message on mobile phone asks for
authentication. Once authenticated the transaction by entering password, the
process completes. This process doesn’t require either the driver or you to
share bank details. Since UPI runs on IMPS, the service will be available real
time and 24X7. As per Shri Nandan Nilekani, advisor to NPCI, UPI is a layer we have put on IMPS. IMPS doesn’t have easy debit
capability. This short comming is addressed by UPI. With UPI coming, in future
it shall be an important merchant platform. Of course there is a need to be
adopted by all banks. Once this is acompliced, money shall be transferred from
a bank to any other bank using a mobile phone.
4.
Where UPI is Useful? UPI is an instant online payment platform. Presently
for payment plat forms used are NEFT, IMPS or a digital wallet. UPI needs
details of payer, and get a billing request on phone with choice to accept or
reject. Taxi service, food ordering, grocery shall take advantage of UPI
system. Presently most of the companies are banking on mobile wallets. Apart
from this, money can be transfered to
family and friends instantly.
5.
Would UPI Affect Mobile Wallets? RBI allows only banks to become Payment Service
Providers of UPI service & not Mobile wallet companies. Therefore, UPI
is a boon to banks and not to mobile wallets. Wallet companies need to enter
banking sector and stop locking money in wallet. Simplified and frictionless
payments infrastructure Using UPI, smart
phone users shall prefer this payment method.
6.
What are Payment Gateways? There are many gateways like CCAvenue, EBS,
Instamojo in India. These payment gateways aggregate various payment methods
like Credit cards, debit cards, mobile wallets and netbanking. However, UPI would
take place of these gateways. Present payment gateways offer detailed information
on payment like purpose of payment,
party making payment etc. apart from transaction management, reconciliation,
insights etc. These gateways offer customisation at every level i.e. payment
options, payment page and alike. UPI cannot provide these services though. More
important aspect is Payment Gateways provide protection against any dispute
between parties to the transaction. UPI is not in a position to take care of
this today. However, these aspect may be provided in future.
7.
Is UPI Secure? UPI transaction is carried in a highly encrypted
format. Authentication similar to OTP is used as directed by RBI. OTP in this
case would be known as MPIN. As vouched by shri Nilekani security aspect with
UPI is fool-proof.
8.
When UPI would be Available to Common
Man? UPI was made available to banks since 11
April 2016. However, banks need little more time to add support for it in their
mobile app. 29 banks agreed to provide UPI service to their customers. Out of
these 21 banks have provided service so far. There is possibility that more
banks would join UPI during this year. The figure shall multiply further. As
per AP Hota, MD & CEO of NPCI RBI’s vision i.e. cashless transactions is in
focus now. After a few months many user friendly aspects may become part of
UPI. This means by end of this financial year common man would start using UPI.
9.
Any Charges for Using UPI? Charges would be controlled by NCPI. Rs. 0.50 to Rs.
5.00 per transaction is expected fee charged by banks.
11.
How to start
- Download
the Axis Pay app from Google Play Store on your smart phone.
- Select
your preferred bank account
- Create
a unique ID (example: yourname@axisbank)
- Verify
your account & set a PIN
How to send money?
- Select
your & receiver’s unique ID
- Enter
amount
- Send
money by entering PIN
How to ask for money?
1. Select your & sender’s
unique ID
2. Enter amount
3. Receive money when sender
approves transaction on his app
How is it different from NEFT,
RTGS, IMPS?
1. NEFT and RTGS
both involve a significant delay whereas UPI is based on IMPS. This is the
basic difference. UPI is basically IMPS designed for a mobile world and is
convenient to use/set up. Present method involves using concerned bank's app go
to funds transfer section, add a recipient, authorise a recipient before money
can be transferred. Adding a recipient means entering a lot of details about
them. It is necessary to know receipt’s bank account number, IFS code, bank
branch. It's confusing and painstaking. Against this with UPI, UPI app linked
to payer’s account needs to enter just payee’s ID similar to payer’s ID
Do I have to have an ICICI
account to use Pockets or a Yes Bank account to use PhonePe?
- UPI is interoperatable
between banks, doesn’t need different app for every account used. It is
very easy for iMobile app users to use UPI. UPI app can be downloaded even
from Flipkart's PhonePe. After downloading link all bank accounts to that
app. Even Axis Pay app can link ICICI account to it. Success depends on
wider use of this application..
Why is this
better than using a wallet?
One may think
that UPI is like a mobile wallet. Further it is interesting to find whether UPI
would make mobile wallets as history. UPI removes a lot of the inconvenience faced
while using netbanking It does make it similar to a mobile wallet. However,
mobile wallets have been around for a while and have pretty sophisticated
systems for payments with linkages to a number of services. Banks need to use much
broader scope of UPI. Further it must be remembered that UPI is different from mobile
wallet. UPI could be used to solve interoperability issues between services,
and it could be used as an easy way to top up your wallet, after NPCI agrees to
connect UPI to wallets. Wallet has additional layer of security i.e.
transaction limit and low size. Hence, mistakes cost would be low.
